Crackerjack rating: 9 / 10.
This legendary Leeds band have been around since 1985, fronted by lead singer David Gedge they have notched up 18 Top 40 singles over the years. And performing live they’re still as brilliant as they always were.
The Guildhall was filled with fortysomethings, intent on reliving the glory days of the British indie scene-and for some there was definitely more hair on the chin than on the head.
Kicking off the evening with Don’t Talk, Just Kiss, Gedge performed song after song with as much romantic angst as he’s ever done. The Gloucester crowd took a while to warm up but by A Million Miles everyone was bouncing. This was quickly followed by Brassneck, taking the crowd back to the days of the John Peel sessions. Enjoying comfortable banter with the crowd, Gedge seems just as at home performing as he did 15 years ago.
The night ended all too soon with Bewitched, another emotion-filled track from the Bizarro album. True to form there was no encore, but we’d been treated to a night of real music, with some classic jingle jangle guitar playing. You can’t beat live music in a venue like this, the acoustics were great and we’re looking forward to more top acts at the Guildhall.
