Since our last visit six months ago, the former coaching inn has brought a touch of the Med to its menu, with new chef Beau Ingleby-Lewis taking charge.
We popped along to the Angel Hotel on a busy Saturday evening to sample Beau’s new
Italian job.
His Mediterranean menu, though limited, has been a success with the added bonus of a free bottle of wine with two main meals. We enjoyed a bottle of Pinot Grigio in the restaurant where it was warm and cosy.
For antipasti I tried the smoked mackerel and bacon salad which was chunks of mackerel and strips of fried bacon tossed in a buttery dressing with iceberg lettuce, red onion and cucumber.
My partner tried the fried garlic mushrooms on toasted focaccia bread. Very tasty.
There was a small selection of Italian pasta dishes for main courses including carbonara and gardinier to steak involtini and chicken risotto. I fancied the creamy carbonara with strips of bacon in a white wine sauce.
My partner had the amatichana which also came with bacon and mushrooms in a rich tomato sauce. Both meals came with a choice of pasta and we opted for spaghetti.
For dessert we enjoyed an English-sounding chocolate cheesecake with chocolate ice cream. The chocolate sponge and biscuit base had a mousse squeezed in the centre with a crunchy chocolate layer on top to finish.
In all fairness the meals did leave a little to be desired and there were only a handful of Italian meals available. However Beau insisted that he’s updating the menu next month and will introduce Italian desserts.
