Nailsworth Brewery’s Old Rocky has been crowned the undisputed Champion Beer of Gloucestershire.
The county branch of the Campaign for Real Ale picked it as its top pint after sampling the efforts of 18 breweries.
Old Rocky, which is brewed at Nailsworth’s Village Inn by owner Jon Kemp, is named after Michael ‘Rocky’ Holbrow.
He helps out at the pub and has his picture on the beer pump badge.
The beer is a described as a light and hoppy 4.4% ale which is full of ‘grapefruity’ flavour. Jon says it would be the perfect beer to accompany breakfast. In his acceptance speech he said: “In Rocky’s youth, he was champion table tennis player of Gloucestershire and champion bowls player of Gloucestershire, so it is only fitting that he has a champion beer of Gloucestershire named after him.”
This award came hot on the heels of another for one of Jon’s beers. Weeks earlier his Alestock, named after the town’s Nailstock music festival, was awarded Best Bitter and Pale Ale below 4.0% abv in the West of England and Wales by the Society of Independent Brewers.
