There was brisk interest when Paul Martin and the BBC Flog It! team called at Cirencester’s Corn Hall last month, and some of the treasures they gathered will go under the hammer at Moore Allen and Innocent’s sale at Norcote on Friday, March 19.

Ceramics and Glass auction - Smiths of Newent

As Cheltenham goes horse-mad, there should be plenty of interest in this stirring bronze steeplechase group at Smiths of Newent’s sale on March 26.

It’s after Isidore Jules Bonheur of the 19th century French artistic dynasty, and its substantial proportions mean it should race up to its estimate of £600-£800.

Meanwhile Smiths of Newent’s valuer got a bit of a surprise when she took a trip out to one of the local farms last week.

There will be a special buzz in the air when Cerys Matthews appears on stage at Gloucester Guildhall on April 11 as part of a short tour.

On the same day she plays in the city, the former Catatonia singer will be celebrating her 42nd birthday.

It seems appropriate then that this tour is a kind of celebration of the musical journey of her life, as it has been some 20 years since she first started out.

She was a playwright, novelist and feminist journalist who, at the turn of the 20th century, founded the International Lyceum Club for Women in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and Florence.
