Two classical musicians from the east and west coasts of the USA met in Gloucestershire last year and are now launching as a duo.
Harpsichord player Micaela Schmitz is originally from California, while violoncello expert Nella Hunkins is from New York. Micaela moved to England in 2001 and now lives in Winchcombe. Last year, Nella moved to Broadway where one of Micaela’s students lives.
The pair were introduced and found they shared a love for early music, especially by Bach. They started practising and recording together and next month will give their first public performance as The Bach Duo.
“It’s strange because moving to Winchcombe from California felt like coming to the sticks,” Micaela said.
“I was worried about finding people to play with but Nella appeared just down the road.”
They will be playing works by Bach and Vivaldi at Stanton Guildhouse, in Worcestershire, on February 9. “It’s time we showed everyone what we’re about,” Micaela said.
Also next month, the duo will be introducing youngsters to their instruments as part of the Chipping Campden Music Festival education programme. For tickets to the Stanton Guildhouse show, contact 01386 584357.
