Description
Dozens of glory-hunting competitors and thousands of spectators will be flocking to Gloucestershire’s most madcap tradition.
The spring bank holiday would not be the same without the Cooper’s Hill cheese-rolling festival of foolhardiness, when contestants hurl themselves down a very steep hill after an 8lb Double Gloucester.
Participants run, trip, fall and plummet as they try to catch the rolling cheese before it reaches the bottom.
If they catch it, they win . . . the right to take it home. The trip down the 1-in-3 hill often ends in bruises or worse.
The event features both men’s and women’s races and uphill races for youngsters.
The origins of the race are shrouded in mystery and may have been going on for hundreds of years.
Real cheeses are used and, for more than 20 years, have been provided by Diana Smart, who makes them on the family farm in Churcham.
The cheese is estimated to reach 70mph, taking about 12 seconds to get to the bottom of the hill.
