Crackerjack rating: 7 / 10.

I’ve been banging the drum for Scouse four-piece Wave Machines since catching a stunning smash and grab set they played at Bristol’s Dot to Dot festival a handful of weeks ago.

It was no flash in the pan either. This neat eight song set at noon on Sunday’s John Peel Stage further underlined their promise.

Their trusty cardboard face masks were in place for chiming opener You Say The Stupidest Things with the punchy drums of choppy guitars of The Greatest Escape We’ve Ever Made to follow.

Carry Me Back To My Home and I Go, I Go, I Go both benefit from instantly memorable choruses and Keep The Lights On remains just about the best new tune I’ve heard all year.

The repetitive Dead Houses failed to hit the mark, but as it was written by the band’s drummer, perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised.

By the time they finished with the straight-ahead indie rock of Punk Spirit they’d more than made their point. Keep an eye on these guys, they deserve to be huge.
