Crackerjack rating: 7 / 10.

For this their first visit to Bristol this Russian company choose one of the best loved ballet's in the repertoire.

Tchaikovsky's  wonderful score gives any choreographer an ideal opportunity to bring the lovely fairytale of 'The Sleeping Beauty' vividly alive.

The main reason for seeing this production would be to watch Maria Kuimova dace the role of Princess Aurora. The controlled graceful elegance she brought to the role left you in no doubt as to the emotions she was trying to convey. Rather like watching the Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney in his present inspired run of form she was in a class of her own.

She was always presented to good effect by Arkady Zinov as Prince Desire who admirable took advantage of the limited opportunities the role offers in comparison to that of the 'Sleeping Beauty'.

Strong contributions also from Anastasia Koreshnikova, a finely villainess portrayal of the Evil Fairy Carabosse, and in contrast a nice gentle Lilac Fairy from Natalya Goroshko.

Corps de Ballet and Chorus work was rather unimaginative and at times inaccurate. The Fairytale characters who carried most of the workload outside of the principal dancers in the second have proved to be satisfactory and enjoyable.

Colourfully costumed but with sets that consisting of Backcloths and Drapes that were not up to the same standard.

Conductor Alexander Kosinsky ensured that despite a few moments when it would have been nice to have had a bigger sound available Tchaikovsky's beautiful music was always a pleasure to listen to.
