Thursday 2nd July 2009

The food festival season is now in full swing and a brand new event takes place in Bath this weekend.

Flavours of the West is billed as “a celebration of regional produce“ and features appearances from some of the region’s best-known chefs.

The event on Saturday and Sunday is being organised by Milsom Place, Bath’s newest shopping and dining quarter which includes some of the city’s most successful restaurants, including Jamie’s Italian, Solo Pizza and The Moon and Sixpence.

The free event includes talks, book signings and chef demonstrations as well as the opportunity to meet producers from the West Country and sample their produce. Exhibitors include Westonbirt Ice Cream, The Bristol Pasta Company and the Bath Pig Company – a brand new venture that makes Spanish-style chorizo sausages made from locally raised pork.

Other producers include Quoins Organic Vineyard based in Bradford on Avon; The Devon Cream Company, Marshfield Ice Cream and The Orchard Pig.

Local cheesemakers The Somerset Cheese Company and Cranborne Chase Cheese will be showing of their wares, as will Paxton and Whitfield. English wine will feature prominently on the Great Western Wine stall and the art of Somerset cider is the theme of author Alan Stone‘s talk.

The Michelin-starred line-up of chefs includes James Sheridan from the Bath Priory Hotel & Restaurant and Hywel Jones (pictured above) from Lucknam Park plus local celebrity chef Martin Blunos and former Masterchef winner James Nathan who now works at the Bath Priory Hotel.

Other chefs making an appearance include Gideon Hitchin of The River Cottage Canteen in Bath and Giles Stonehouse from Bath Spa Hotel.

Baker Richard Bertinet, who established a very successful cookery school in Bath, will be doing a demonstration, as will food writer Xanthe Clay of the Daily Telegraph who will be demonstrating from her brand new book Ten Minutes to Table.
